Managing a team has never been a simple task: dealing with different work styles, personalities and points of view requires a highly skilled leader to profit from everyone’s strengths, not letting differences get in the way of the final result.

We are living in times that present an extra challenge: remote work. Team members are not only different in style, but, more often than not, belong to different cultures and are located in different countries. How can a project manager create a work environment that encourages everyone to work hard, while enjoying the process?

Every company has a culture that becomes very visible once you cross the entrance door. But it is sometimes difficult to replicate that feeling when all work is being done remotely. Creating a strong sense of community among the people working together may be a make-or-break requirement for the success of a project.

Project managers will have to pay a lot of attention to the means of communication they choose, organizing the times and the platforms they use, so that team members know what to expect and what is expected of them. It is also vital to encourage interaction among them, both on work-related topics and casual conversation. Using a cloud repository system is also a way of making sure everyone is on the same page and keeping track of the progress and changes in the project.

Finally, the project manager will have to choose the work framework that goes best with their team and take the steps to implement it. It may mean to set the system first, so that the initial framework is well established and everyone knows for sure what their responsibilities are and what they should account for. However, for a work framework to be successful, the next stage involves loosening the ties: giving team members freedom to work in the way that suits them best, at the times they feel most comfortable, bringing new ideas and solutions to the team.
